BDK's latest dud
The next 2025 review comes from French niche house bdk Parfums and their latest "Vanille Caviar | bdk Parfums" and in yet another Parfumo classic, the community believes this to be a gourmand fragrance. Is there anything to warrant such an opinion? That depends on your definition of edible.
I've now smelled "Vanille Caviar | bdk Parfums" once off the strip and had a full wear to follow it up. In both cases, I've noted that the fragrance has a very quirky and dare I say weird smell to it. In the on-skin wear, the scent does open with some spicy vanilla, somewhat comparable to how it's done in Electimuss' Vanilla Edesia. However, that vanilla is clearly opposed by a salty-aromatic tonality that I recognize from one of Atelier des Ors' recent flops, that being Noir by Night: a fragrance with a piercing caviar note. In "Vanille Caviar | bdk Parfums", you smell a similar type of salty note, built on balsam with some implied woody touches. I feel like those woody touches are in the realm of styrax, i.e. it has that style of an animalic-woody touch to it.
And much like with the Atelier des Ors, the thing that I can't wrap my head around with as it relates to "Vanille Caviar | bdk Parfums" is the quality. The quality of the underlying notes comes to question due to the structure which in of itself is extremely quirky and dare I say unwearable, as the saltiness is opposed by some bitter-aromatic touches that is the olfactory equivalent of licking yourself after a proper sweat session at the gym. The performance is slightly below average and the value, largely driven by BDK's retail pricing, isn't the worst. Yet ultimately, the artistry of the product is too daring even for a niche veteran like me who is nearing 1,100 fragrances smelled in the last 5 years. Not poor-poor, but still rather poor.
