Fantastic leathery sweet saffron-tobacco
The Dolce & Gabbana Velvet line is overlooked, even when it comes to designer private lines, which are already less popular than the mainstream niche brands. I think Velvet Zafferano is a real gem that hasn't been getting the attention it deserves.
It opens with a slightly rubbery leather and a hint of medicinal tones that exemplify the almost-fantasy "saffron" note in perfumery these days. Of course, saffron spice has a real scent but because of cost and regulations, the vast majority of saffron accords in perfumes are created mostly with aromachemicals, most notably safraleine, which introduces that sharp leathery aspect. Another way brands/marketers use "saffron" in the notes is as a nod to the Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum base (I've also seen "praline" used for this, as in Haltane and Cloud Eau de Parfum). And we have that sharp cotton-candy-like sweetness here too, though it is tempered by the leathery and medicinal vibe.
The heart of the fragrance introduces a new player, a tobacco note similar to the same note in Tobacolor or Side Effect. This makes the fragrance much more masculine and interesting, as opposed to just another BR540-with-more-notes frag. The drydown is sweet and woody. Longevity is fantastic, while sillage is passable. All in all, a really great all-around fragrance that can be used in almost any situation, save very hot summer days. Would have probably made my 2024 releases top 10 had I sampled this last year.
