The origin of the fashion company Maison Martin Margiela is in Belgium. Martin Margiela studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He was Jean-Paul Gaultier's assistant for a while and later chief designer for women's fashion at Hermès. During this time, he founded his own fashion company, Maison Martin Margiela, with a Brussels retailer.

Fashion is brought to the forefront through a variety of means. The models on the catwalk are always masked, in the catalogs they are made unrecognizable with black bars in front of their faces.
