Royal Rhubarb?
In my long search for THE vetiver fragrance, I eventually came across this one. During the first testing on paper, I was thrilled because a scent that has vetiver in its name, and also connects it with "royal," really seemed not to overpromise: Strong vetiver, yet not too dark and heavy, but beautifully integrated with fresh notes, a gentle woodiness, and also very good longevity. When I then applied it to my skin for a second test, I was horrified: I smelled nothing but - rhubarb from the very beginning. I couldn't believe my nose and did another comparison test on a scent strip. And indeed: It must have been something to do with me, because I was just as thrilled as during the first impression. The vetiver was again royal, unmistakably in the spotlight, and not a trace of sour vegetable. A beautiful scent. Only my skin seems not to be conducive to it. I will probably have to keep searching.

Birkholz and Performance?
Today I made another spontaneous visit to the Turquoise. Alongside Tom Ford, the Birkholz line is prominently offered to the interested visitor, while most of the niche brands they carry are rather reserved for the back areas.

Sir Santal had been on my mind for a while, but today was the day.

Okay, sprayed it on, no problem.

But it's not about the fine gentleman. The good Lord gave me two arms, so I could apply another fragrance on my left. Since I was already at Birkholz, I ultimately chose the one being discussed here. I like vetiver, and I had already tested several other scents from the house.

Boom. After 2 sprays, the bottle gave up. No matter what I did, nothing happened anymore. The staff had already disappeared upon my arrival. Whether they know and fear me by now, or if there were other reasons, or even if it was a product of chance, we probably won't find out in this life.

In any case, it was extremely frustrating, as I would have liked to add 1-2 more spritzes. It couldn't have been due to the fill level, as it was still almost full.

Curiously, I can't say much about the scent. It presented me with a pleasant green woody vetiver. Very linear. Nothing else. Present for maybe 1 hour, then clearly diminishing, after 4 hours not even close to the skin.

Unfortunately, Royal Vetiver joins my testing experience with Birkholz. I find their concept good, and from what I've seen (on YouTube), the family seems very likable to me. The scents I've sniffed so far are also quite appealing.

But when the lights go out after 3-4 hours, which may also be due to my skin, it unfortunately does not encourage my desire to buy at all.

Sorry to Berlin…

Birkenholz takes a crystal-clear cue from Guerlain's classic in the same fragrance category with "Royal Vetiver" - unashamed of its direction, without compromising on quality, and not deterring or excluding newcomers to the vetiver game. "Royal Vetiver" delivers on its promises and, to my nose, is one of the better vetivers that have emerged in the last five to ten years. Damn good!

"Royal Vetiver" reminds me why I might love and use vetivers more than any other fragrances. It starts with a zesty, bright, and incredibly high-quality grapefruit that never smells like deodorant. It's youthful, sexy, and invigorating. Yet at the same time, it is thoroughly a vetiver. And a remarkably potent and confidently composed one at that. No half-measures were taken or chosen here. It exudes confidence and a clear presence. Perfect for the office. It's simply a highlight for vetiver junkies. A doctor's office meets a boys' locker room. Without the slightest hint of sweat. It certainly does not reinvent the wheel. But it does the tried-and-true and the gold standard so well that one can only tip their hat. Vetiver tip - pure, natural, and clean!

Bottle: simple and unobtrusive in a large collection
Sillage: present, but close
Longevity: 5-7 hours, requires little extra effort

Conclusion: a sleek, yet very classic and clear vetiver, to which I readily grant the designation "royal." Finest stuff for the modern man with style.

A young wild animal is in full swing.
In the underbrush, it rubs the bark off its antlers.
I'm definitely not the target audience.

The zesty fruit passes quickly. Earthy vetiver takes over with woods. Soft, warm + creamy. A calm + gentle scent, more for men.

The more affordable La Gemme Tygar. An absolute winter sweater scent, just how a man or my sweater should smell.

Reminds me of Vetiver & Grapefruit by Molton Brown. A lovely vetiver scent, unfortunately lacking in performance. Lasts about 5 hours for me.

Rhubarb and grapefruit fade quickly, the vetiver comes through fast. Then warm woodiness follows, without being completely cozy.

Spraying with a blockhead? Freshly painted wood, but for me, it's more varnish than wood. Still kind of cool.
