Better than Tam Dao
I bought this yesterday and it’s so beautiful. It’s hard to say but for me is an improved formula of TamDao by Diptyque.

While (for me) TD is more about the cedar than the sandalwood, that pencil shave smell, this is creamier, fresher and performs better, altough it’s a light (but airy) scent. Those around you will notice it.

For those who don’t know tam dao, Santal by Fragonard smells of clear clean wood, along with clean and fresh note, a bit green, a bit flowery but the central note is a milky clean wood.

Mental matter
With fragrances with monothematic names, such as Santal here for example, one actually thinks that one directly suspects what awaits one, namely sandalwood or at least that this ingredient plays a central role.

Most of the time that's true, but Fragonard takes us a little astray, because the velvety soft sandalwood spreads out quite well in the top note, and this congenially in combination with the citric notes and the spicy rosemary touch, but soon it withdraws and leaves the main stage to the actual supporting roles.

In this case it means that the fragrance is rather limonade sweet until the drydown, which doesn't have to be a mistake in itself, but blocks my enjoyment of sandalwood too much. Unfortunately, the remaining spicy to woody notes are also lost. And at some point one finds oneself in the perceived low-price segment or wonders what this has to do with the name.

Too bad, because the prelude was absolutely appealing, thanks to the contrast of discreetly sparkling citrus notes, especially the famous mandarin and the warm sandalwood. Should have stayed that way for a long time, but then Santal ebbs away and somehow lets the anticipation fade. At least the potential was there.
