Exquisite carnation
Carnation is a note that often gets blended in with other notes so that it tends to slip under the radar. In the case of Billet Doux, carnation really shines. So much so that I have a new-found love for the flower.

I disagree with those that find this fragrance plain, Billet Doux for me is very memorable. It strikes me as something very different, unique even.

Other than the dominant carnation, subtle spices and sweet citruses make up the composition. On my skin in particular, Billet Doux smells clean, like old-fashioned soap and cedar chests. It is a lot prettier than what I describe of course.

Being mostly soapy powder with hints of citrus, spices and woods now and then, Billet Doux is a fragrance that I believed I could only dream about. Unfortunately my skin, although it does agree with this fragrance, makes the cedar note strong, and in some ways, quite masculine.

The sweetness is not done justice on my skin, however when I've smelt this fragrance on others, Billet Doux is beyond amazing.

Fragonard's fragrances are quite distinctive and original. They also have a classic type feel that is highlighted by their beautiful, 19th century inspired bottles. Such a fragrance as Billet Doux seems fit for a Queen.

The lasting power is wonderfully good, as is the sillage which is neither overpowering nor whimsically soft. I owe my thanks to the sales assistant who so kindly gave me many samples of this beautiful fragrance.

A typical gift shop item
This perfume is so harmless and innocent that I really cannot say much about it other than it is pleasing. It smells like hand-milled expensive soap that you would put into your drawer.

I love it, however. You have to spray quite a lot before a soft cloud surrounds you and greets you at every movement. Then it holds, and slowly becomes a skin scent which lasts many hours.

The outside carton is very nice and holds a golden bottle. This makes a nice gift.

In today's market, it does not seem strong enough to make a statement.

Lovely, I say, a little "love letter". Old-fashioned, of good quality, and gentle. If a movie character were to wear this scent, it could be Melanie Hamilton in "Gone with the Wind".

(When I want a stronger Carnation note, my choice would be "En Avion" by Caron.)

Love Letter to the Perfect Clove
Starting situation: I love the scent of cloves. And sometimes I enjoy wearing recognizable soliflore notes, such as the lily of the valley in the old Diorissimo, in Fragonard's Marche aux Fleurs, Annick Goutal's Le Muguet, or in Lily of the Valley by Bronnley: it is embedded in other fragrance notes everywhere, yet it remains recognizable, it does not get lost.

I had long wished for something similar in a clove perfume. And what a journey I embarked on in search of sharp spice clouds! Misleadingly, for example, Serge Lutens, whom I otherwise hold in high regard, named his spicy clove pepper bomb Vitriol d`Œillet (Crystal of the Clove), after the sought-after floral note. Wrong path! Even in Nina Ricci's classic L´air du temps, you find a strongly spiced clove variant, although garden cloves are also included here.

I like these scents, but I wanted something that smelled like the powdery pink, frayed flowers that stretched their heads towards me from the neighbor's garden when I was a child, so spicy-powdery-floral-soft, that is what I longed for. The scent of garden cloves always feels to me like waking up in a bed dressed in pink flannel sheets: cozy-soft and warm… Or like a cuddly flannel sweater after a long day, simply homely.

Chrisantiss' comment on Fragonard's clove version encouraged me: I took the plunge and ordered it blind - and I was not disappointed! A wonderfully prominent, finely spiced clove, enhanced in its softness by vanilla, supported by gentle companions frangipani and peony and fresh notes of bergamot, lemon, and mandarin (which remain subtly in the background as a fresh breath) and cedar (which forms a warm-woody base but does not introduce any masculinity). The main impression remains the clove, just as I had wished.

Billet doux (Love Letter) is truly a scent to fall in love with. Fragonard uses the variety "Œeillet de poete" for the clove note, also known in English as "Sweet William" (and therefore also represented in Catherine's bridal bouquet last year). Poetic, that fits the scent and also its name: a poetically written letter that speaks of love.

It is not a complex scent, like L´Heure Bleue or Un air de Paris, not an epic work, but a small stroke of luck. A scent that can sweeten a rainy Wednesday or an indecisive Thursday, you know what I mean? It is like the simple, pretty dress that satisfies us so much after an eternal search in the morning. Like the perfect book that you just stumbled upon while browsing, and that was exactly the right one to entertain. It simply fits and brings happiness. Petit bonheur say the French: the little happiness. And I do not want to belittle the scent or call it an everyday fragrance: it is quite elegant, playful, and feminine.

This perfume does not become intrusive with normal dosage, it fits in any weather condition. The longevity proves to be very good for me, as it is also an EdP, and this leads me to point out the truly affordable price.

Therefore, I recommend this treasure to all who are looking for a wonderful, elegant, floral-spicy, true clove scent!

Yes, No, Maybe...
The title refers not to the fragrance, but to the love letter. Not the passionate, romantic, tear-soaked, adult love letter. The very first, sweet, clumsy, innocent “Will you go out with me? Yes... No... Maybe...” Three answers to tick off. Although the hope-giving option “maybe” didn’t even exist in my school days. Back then, it was clear-cut - either or. Not that I received stacks of such notes... Just a few, to which I reacted quite strangely. Like in fourth grade, when I hit a boy for his love confession. Not that I was considered aggressive or tough, quite the opposite. The element of surprise played a big role on both sides. In eighth grade, the story almost repeated itself. After an attempted kiss :) Embarrassing... The “Maybe” in the notes was later introduced as a protective measure for both sides, I suspect :)

Billet Doux... The love letter. That’s how the fragrance is - Yes... no... maybe... Young, cheerful, radiant. The first buds of feeling. *Pfft-pfft* I briefly perceive the fresh citrus note and - poof - it’s already gone. The garden carnation comes through very authentically and remains until the end. This flower is not the passionately moaning rose, the enchanting tuberose, or the animalistically wicked jasmine bloom. It is here like the last step from childhood through the threshold into youth in all its strength and pulsating zest for life. Luckily, without any hint of girlish synthetic fruit-gourmand sweetness - one will search in vain for that here. Instead, a light creaminess caresses the nose. Soft, delicate, and natural like the fringed carnation petals. Innocent, transparent, slightly nostalgic yet elegant romance in a bottle with solid 7-hour longevity and a softly enveloping middle sillage. A testing tip for all who enjoy romantic floral fragrances or (at least occasionally) soliflore scents. Because that is ultimately what the fragrance is - a carnation soliflore. Now, some noses will surely wrinkle: it lacks depth, complexity. I myself tend to feel that way (one gets spoiled by Parfumo). But sometimes, it can just be simple. It’s a pity that soliflores are currently not enjoying high popularity. Just like letter writing itself. Is there even still a handwritten “Yes-No-Maybe” in our fast-paced times? Has it perhaps already been completely replaced in our smartphone age by the soulless typing with an attached smiley? After my son, at 11, STILL did not master cursive writing (it is at the discretion of local teachers whether they teach the “becoming obsolete cursive” to the children), I took matters into my own hands and “forced” him to learn cursive writing at home. My later-you-will-be-grateful-for-this sermon was met with groans and eye rolls. My joking you-will-be-able-to-write-love-letters argument was met with an even louder groan and an even wilder eye roll :) Of course, I didn’t mention the (theoretical) risk of getting beaten up...

Present Floral Bouquet
The top notes sound fruity, but this fragrance immediately comes with flowers upon flowers.
In the perfumery, this perfume was recommended to me as a carnation scent.
Unfortunately, flowers don't smell like they used to these days, unless they are in the garden. But we don't have any carnations.

I think I can smell some jasmine, but according to the pyramid, there shouldn't be any in it.

The fact is, this is a delightful scent, clear, lovely, and pure. It is not an everyday floral fragrance, but something special.
A must for lovers of floral scents.
I have several floral fragrances, but this one surpasses them all. I almost bought it, but I also had other fragrances in mind at the perfumery and had to make a decision.

The longevity is very good, which is not often the case with softly floral scents.

Edit: After hours, you have a beautiful base that smells like expensive cream or body lotion. So it is also a creamy scent.

The fragrance accord transitions from citrusy to green hesperidic notes, leading to a harmonious yet fresh floral note (clove).

Soft, warm-spicy garden clove with citrus sprinkles. And delicate floral companions in a wooden bed. Bright, airy + nostalgic.

An exceptionally beautiful soliflore: clove all over. But softly nestled, nostalgic, enchanting. Excellent longevity.

Insanity - an authentic, very creamy carnation scent rises up, soft and lovely. It also has a bit of vintage charm, romantic.

Prominent clove is simultaneously transparent, bright, soapy, and reminiscent of Cabochard/Aramis - woody-spicy. Linear development.

Romantic floral scent, airy, transparent, iridescent, and as light as a soap bubble. Almost too light for a perfume. Still beautiful.
