Do you believe in signatures?

Do you believe in signatures? 5

I was just debating with myself about signatures because I realize I just can't choose one perfume to be my signature. I've listed Givenchy III (2007) as my signature (and I love it!), but whenever I wear something else I love, I'd choose that one Smile.

How about you? Do you have a signature and why?

3

No. I rarely wear the same fragrance two days in a row. I also don't have a single fragrance associated with a specific place (like at work, etc.) so people in specific places always get a different Smirky scent.

1

I used to say 4. Montabaco Parfum was my signature since it was my favorite versatile scent, but I don't wear it any more than my other frags (~10-15 times a year), so it doesn't really make sense to call it that.

1

I have 2. Nawab of Oudh Intensivo listed as my “signature” but that’s only because it’s currently my favorite fragrance. Be that as it may, I’ve only worn it 7 times in 2024.

2

It's the impossible question. I admire people who have a signature scent, wearing the same over the years... But, as the same time, I find that very boring.

4

I would be surprised if you would find anyone on a fragrance forum truly having a signature scent. Participants here enjoy different fragrances and likely wear different ones regularly. Those who truly have a signature scent that they can be identified with are less likely to be learning about new fragrances, exploring what is out there, and building a collection.

It depends on what you mean by "signature fragrance". If that means a fragrance that you wear almost all the time and everybody associates that particular fragrance being you, then no, personally I could never have only one fragrance like that. I get nose blind super easily so I need to have a large rotation of different fragrances to be able to smell them all correctly. However to me signature fragrance means something else. It means a special fragrance that has a special meaning to me and that feels like me and makes me feel amazing and that I want to wear during extra special moments. In that sense yes, I have always had a signature fragrance. Currently it is Euphoria (2023) Eau de Toilette. ✨💛✨

I want to second Lempi's post.

In my view, there's two ways to understand the concept of a 'signature' fragrance. The first one is the obvious, the fragrance that you wear all the time and everywhere, and I would imagine there's only a handful of people on a fragrance forum who would have such a fragrance. On the other hand, I understand signature fragrance as that one very special fragrance with which I have a strong personal connection and can very heavily identify with, even if I may not wear it nearly as often.

After all - and I recognize this may come down just to my personal experience but.. - how often do I actually have to physically put down my signature? It's certainly not an everyday thing. And while it's nothing particularly special, in my mind I associate the act of signing, and the concept itself, with the affirmation of my identity.

It may sound a bit air headed but ultimately I think of a signature fragrance as that scent which fully captures and embodies my aesthetic vision, values and identity, and which I would look for whenever I want to most fully express myself, unconstrained by external conditions, social acceptance and so on.

@Stinxjo Couldn't have phrased this better myself, this is exactly how I'm thinking about it, couldn't agree more! 👍

Hi, thanks all of you, you are really great at spelling what I also feel: I don't think people around me associate me with a special fragrance, I don't think people contributing here have only one fragrance. And that you could have a special place for some of your fragrances. For me they are Acqua di Giò Profondo (2020) Eau de Parfum (which I wear when I met my sweetheart - and she asks me to wear it with due retenue), Field Notes From Paris which I wear to feel confident or just because I am setting sail to Paris, maybe Louis will become one (present I gifted myself for my birthday with the support of a voucher of my darling). Habit Rouge Eau de Parfum is also a dear friend. if I had to choose one however, certainly Field Notes From Paris because Paris just feels home to me. But it's a journey, and i have a desire to explore so much other fragrances!

As a fragrance enthusiast (or a drug/shopping addict), I believe in having a signature smell. Not a particular perfume per se, but rather a general scent profile people associate with my presence. Once they smell something oriental and a bit intrusive, they will instinctively know it's "that guy."

So rather than trying to find a signature, find a scent profile that resonates with you. This gives you an excuse to buy a bunch of expensive fragrances that fall into the given category. Don't mind me, just trying to justify the fact that I own multiple Amouages.

I like the idea of having a signature scent but in a slightly different way—I tend to choose a main fragrance for specific seasons, places, or events. For me, scent is deeply tied to emotion, and I enjoy creating a connection between certain fragrances and specific settings.

It’s a bit like art: a painting that’s beautiful in a dining room might feel out of place in an office. Similarly, the right fragrance can elevate or complement a moment perfectly.

For the office, Prada L’Homme is my go-to—it feels professional and well-suited for that setting. I’ve been eyeing Penhaligon's Sartorial for a while now since it seems like it would work really well in a similar context, but I haven’t had the chance to test it yet. For workouts, I always reach for a very small amount of Allure Homme Sport Eau Extrême—it’s energizing and, for me at least, fits that scenario.

I didn’t  think I had a signature scent, because I wear different perfumes depending on my mood, the occasion etc. But, just the other day, I was wearing Mon Guerlain, and my daughter said that it’s the one that smells like me!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your thoughts on the subject! Today I realized that, for me, signatures are the scents I can relate to.

I can find a number of scents good objectively, but there are only few I can relate to. Those are also the scents I can crave for. I don't know how to put it otherwise Smile

I gravitate to Gentleman Givenchy Eau de Parfum a lot and would consider it to be my signature scent.

- It was the perfume that got me started in the fragrance hobby

- It is the perfume I wore when I met my now girlfriend and she'd want me to wear it more often.

- It is the "I could smell you were already here" scent. That already classifies a signature in my book, to others

- I've got quite some perfumes in my collection but this is my go-to for going out and social events of my job. (Not in summer though, then it is Greenley )

I have a signature, Chanel Bois des Îles Eau de Toilette, but I don't wear it every day. Instead I wear it frequently but not all the time, but I always make sure to wear it for holiday celebrations with family and friends. This way there is a positive scent association that has built up overtime even though I wear a lot of different perfumes. I decided to do this because 1) it's my most favorite scent, 2) I'm scared of either building an anosmia to it or to developing a sensitivity to it's ingredients from wearing it too much and therefore ruining my ability to enjoy it, 3) I wanted a signature scent people would associate with me.

1

In the past I have had a signature scent, Dior Fahrenheit was a scent I used to wear almost everyday but I think this was mainly because my collection was much smaller back when I had it and I didn't have many options.

Weirdly I do have one signature scent, my signature bed time scent is Prada Amber Pour Homme, I know it's kind of pointless to wear a scent to bed everyday 😆 but I just feel like it's the cherry on top of smelling fresh after a shower!

I like the idea of a signature scent but I think I would get tired of wearing the same scent so often and I think it would stop me from appreciating the scent as much. I do have scents I wear often especially season dependent scents and I think eventually I could find a summer signature or winter signature but I am unsure about an all year round signature, I'd have to find my perfect masterpiece for that!

2

I definitely fall into the scent promiscuous category.  My tastes tend toward scents that seem to fade after 6-8 hours because of this, too (although longevity can be a very subjective and polarizing quality).  I like having the option to try on something different in the evening or to bed without interference.

1

I used to be faithfully married to Le Feu d'Issey until it got discontinued. Then wore just the Le Feu d'Issey Light until that disappeared, too. I would try other things, but nothing spoke to me like these two. Now, I`m a scent whore, just want to try everything under the sun.

I like the idea of a signature scent that can remind your loved ones of you even when you're not there, but realistically, I don't think I could ever limit myself to one because I'm always wearing different fragrances. There are definitely a few that I wear more often than others like Green Irish Tweed, Gris Charnel, Elite, and Colonia, but these are just dumb reaches, not really signatures the way I understand the concept.

I feel like there are two different ways to view the meaning of "signature scent".

One is external – where you predominantly wear one particular thing, so people around you start associating it with you. The other is internal – a scent that you don't necessarily wear often, but that you associate with yourself. The one you personally vibe with the most.

I also feel that both views are valid in their own right. For the past decade and a half I had just one perfume. If I wanted to smell extra pretty, I sprayed Piazza di Spagna and that was that. It became my signature in a more widely used external sense. But then I suddenly came to a (unexpected, I know) conclusion, that if I continue using it, it will end.

And so I started learning about perfumes and trying lots of new things to figure out who I am and what I actually like. Among the things I've tried I found a house that I really vibed with, and one of their fragrances in particular that I fell in love with. So at the moment I consider my signature to be Solo Vulcan. I don't wear it often, because I'm still kind of obsessed with this new hobby and spend most days testing new decants of whatever I can find. But when I think of perfumes, I can easily and wholeheartedly respond that Vulcan is my thing. There may be many like it, but that one is mine.

So there's that.

Hello,

On my side I cannot wear just one fragrance even if it's the greatest I would have.
However, I can have a Signature perfume yes that I really like to wear and I could wear regularly in case I wouldn't have other fragrances. For the winter season it would be: Nuit des Rois

Me too Ringtale, can't choose one perfume to be my signature., In my case, they all represent me. I enjoy wearing them, but there are always favorites for certain occasions or one that is the best of all.
If you mean a signatures as a characteristic scent that is deeply associated with a person, then, I will consider Jazz by Yves Saint Laurent as my signature.

In undergrad and right after graduating I wore almost exclusively Cheirosa '62 and still love it so I guess that's as close as I have to a signature scent right now (even though it's been a while since I've worn it), but now that I've gotten more into researching fragrances and getting sample kits I have too many to mix and match and go through to really have a signature now!

I do, since a friend of mine at some point told me "you smell different from usual".

Smell is the sense that evokes memories most strongly, so it makes sense that smelling the same way most of the time would help give an impression, and also give you an """aura""" of consistency and coherence even if you wear radically different outfits.

That said, I personally have so many frangrances I like that I believe are suited for different occasions that it's hard to limit myself to just one, or even just a few, and at this point I guess I treat my scents more like I treat my clothes, and I'm happy when some people recognize I'm wearing a specific fragrance I wear in certain occasion.
