Morbid Summer Feeling
Since I am currently more than open to any scent that promises even a hint of sunny disposition, and also because I received the fragrance "Belle de Soleil" by Fragonard in a scent package sent to me as the winner of a sample package (my heartfelt thanks to the dear Parfuma Süchtig), which seemed to promise just that sun, I surrendered to this olfactory experience with joyful anticipation of summer sunshine.
Well, the very first impression was a bit piercing, similar to the summer sun that one looks at without sunglasses despite knowing better. However, this impression lasted as briefly as the aforementioned pain of the temporarily blinded eye.
Immediately following, a creamy scent spread out, carrying a memory of summer, beach, and sunscreen. Clearly Tiaré and also Frangipani in sisterly union. The citrusy top note must have zoomed past me like a jetski on the sea that unfolds before my inner scent eye, unless the slightly piercing entrance was indeed the same. Be that as it may, "zoomed past" contains the adverb 'past,' so it must be so, and I surrender to the beach association; bright shining sand in the summer sun, small shells lining the transition from beach to sea, whose gentle waves softly wash up with tiny frothy crowns, directly adjacent to the beach are flowers, the aforementioned Frangipani and Tiaré spreading their summery scent,...
... and right behind lies a cemetery, the smell of stale flower water, long wilted jasmine mingles in a questionable scent composition with the previously pleasant sun scent into a now slightly moldy summer feeling. Now the impression arises that my sunscreen has fallen into one of those green plastic containers with that long spout for inserting into the grave soil, unfortunately, the previous user forgot to pour out the flower water, so it has taken on a muddy brown discoloration including a rather intense brackish water smell.
Where on earth has my summer-sun-sunscreen-beach scent gone?!
Ah, yes, there it is, shimmering again beneath the slightly rotten flower water, which has clearly provided moisture to the jasmine. And it persists, like a battle of opposites, guiding my olfactory thoughts away from the cemetery towards the white beach and sea and sunscreen. Wonderful! That's where I wanted to be...
However, the cemetery association is far from defeated, it tugs at me, exuding its morbid scent and ruining my beautiful sun vision.
This struggle of forces extends annoyingly long over several hours, making it seem to me as if my two imaginary scent arms have been stretched to three times their original length due to the battle for dominance between the two contenders; I feel as if I have come from a scent rack that has tortured me for hours due to the two completely different scent directions.
To make matters worse, after a few hours, the earthy-grassy-bitter scent of vetiver joins in, adding an earthy-moldy impression to the brackish-moldy jasmine water effect.
And thus, in the end, the cemetery association (I feel like my predecessor Cleopatra) has emerged victorious in the struggle of the contenders.
To my regret, I would like to say, as the predominating summer-sunscreen scent is truly a beautiful one. I also wonder why I do not perceive this scent direction exclusively like so many others here? Could it be due to my occasionally morbid humor, character,...? I do not know. I only know that I experienced a bouncing back and forth of scent impressions, and not always to my delight.
However, anyone who is a lover of extreme contrasts in fragrances could indeed find great satisfaction here. I would say, at their summery sunny, morbid expense.
