HIGHS & LOWS
In the aftermath of publishing my 2024 rankings, Lost in Paris was the #1 scent on my sampling target list going into 2025. Driven by the huge retail price tag and the almost strictly (albeit limited) positive coverage, the expectations were firmly placed at the highest of highs, yet Lost in Paris also features significant lows.
One could argue that it is the scent's opening that makes the sale here as Lost in Paris opens as a high-quality gourmand fragrance with a very realistic sweetened/bakery style orange smell. I have seen various people compare this to the patisserie smell that Sweetie Aoud has, but I am more-so reminded of Creme Savers or products like it, i.e. the swirl candy that is half white, half orange. As I don't partake in alcohol consumption, the listed curaçao is hard for me to find and I would argue that the scent never features a boozy feel throughout the evolution.
The first negative of the scent comes when I smell it on-skin. The scent lists "mandarin orange" in the top which I suspect is the reason why the scent has some window cleaner feel to it. This particular orange note is something that I already have history with as Italian premium brand Royal Crown also used it in Celebration. Ultimately, I feel like this note gives way and isn't there 30 minutes into the drydown.
Accords: sweet-creamy-citrusy-gourmand-spicy
Subsequently heading into the aforementioned drydown, butter appears to be the primary note on which the base is structured. On-skin, the scent has a sweet-creamy-spicy structure that is not too far from THOO's signature DNA with scents like Wonderly or even scents like Spice D'Arno. This is primarily due to the opening gourmand highlights not being as relevant in the drydown, making for a very average drydown with Roja's blend quality being the only thing carrying it forward.
Performance of the scent is fairly moderate throughout (average projection within a couple meters) and while I don't think there is a scent like it in the niche market today (perhaps the closest ideas would be between Panettone and Sweetie Aoud), I do believe that the retail price tag of €1,195/100ml should justify more than just uniqueness. As much as the artistry is towards the 99th percentile of the modern niche market, Roja's history of elite blending is not visible with Lost in Paris and that is a significant shortfall of the scent. To further comment on the pricing, the scent was originally listed at Harrods with a price tag of €995 (£850) and while the brand has offered me the chance to honor that price, them not changing it is still a red flag.
While my current collection peaks at the €600/100ml price tier, I was (and remain) extremely open to entering the tier above it to make for a more distinguished collection. However, that entry point won't be here as I ultimately feel like the product doesn't align with the expectations. There are very few premium products in the market today that can successfully retain the opening highs into the drydown and to me, Lost in Paris is not one of those fragrances.
