What’s your favorite vanilla fragrance and why?

Babycat does not arrive. She waits. At first there is a flicker — pink pepper, a spark struck in a darkened room. Then incense begins its slow ecclesiastical ascent, and the air turns amber and serious. The vanilla does not beg to be eaten. It smolders. It has read books. It keeps secrets. There is suede here — not fabric, but the memory of a touch. It is vanilla in boots, vanilla with boundaries If she were a literary heroine, she would be Jane Eyre — not the governess in gray, but the woman who stands upright in the ruins of Thornfield and refuses to barter herself for comfort. There is restraint. There is heat banked like coals. The sweetness is chosen, not given. Babycat is about control. About tension held in the jaw. About fire that has learned patience.

Goddess Eau de Parfum enters in daylight. Lavender lifts the curtain first — a clean, almost herbal clarity. Then the vanilla begins its threefold unfurling: infusion, caviar, absolute. It is not hunger. It is radiance. Where Babycat burns in shadow, Goddess glows in the open. The cacao is dusted lightly, like powder at the collarbone. Ginger flashes and disappears. Everything is composed. Nothing stains. If she were a heroine, she would be Elizabeth Bennet — perceptive, self-possessed, aware of her worth without theatricality. Her sweetness is intelligent. Her warmth is social. She knows how to enter a room without raising her voice. Goddess is vanilla civilized. It has posture. It carries a structured handbag. It leaves before it becomes excessive.

Fire at Will is not concerned with restraint. It opens softly — mimosa, pale as pressed flowers between pages — and then the sugar begins its slow descent. Brown sugar. Tonka. Musk. The vanilla is plush, almost edible, yet curiously adult in its steadiness. This is not bakery vanilla. It is skin vanilla. It hums. If she were a heroine, she would be Hester Prynne — not in shame, but in defiance. Marked, luminous, impossible to ignore. There is sweetness here, yes, but it is worn openly, even provocatively. The musk keeps it grounded; the warmth refuses apology. Fire at Will is vanilla unafraid of being wanted.

Babycat is vertical — spice to incense to suede-wrapped vanilla, tension tightening like a corset.

Goddess is architectural — aromatic lift, creamy expansion, resinous grounding, all proportioned.

Fire at Will is horizontal — soft bloom into sugared warmth, a steady spreading glow.

Lord of Misrule Perfume The vanilla isn’t overly sweet. It’s more like vanilla extract. That with pepper over a super earthy patchouli is just so good. Very dark and witchy. It’s one of my favorite fragrances to wear in the fall.

I have two main types of vanilla scents I like:

1. Green vanilla:

Guerlain Angélique Noire - a famous classic, a great blend of green vanilla and angelica. It does smell a little too commercial for me to wear regularly but I have to appreciate the OG

Fischersund No_101 - goes in a similar direction of Angélique Noire but much greener and meaner 😀 Cold and bitter vanilla and angelica, Icelandic style

DS & Durga Deep Dark Vanilla - raw, herbal, earthy, medicinal vanilla; I called it the "Plague doctor's vanilla" in my review of it, and I stand by that description

2. Vanilla + incense/smoke combo:

Liis BO - soft paper-like vanilla and incense that smell like pencil shavings to me in the best way possible

Chapel Factory Idolatry - oddly plastic-y vanilla and incense (in a good way)

Necros Corpse of a Star and Doll-like Creature - probably my favorite takes on vanilla as a note

Corpse of a Star is one of my two signature scents, it has a burnt vanilla note that is just blended so well with the smoke, it evokes the feeling of cosmos to me

Doll-like Creature can only be described as "glassy skin vanilla", I have not smelled anything similar to it. It is the "uncanny valley of skin scents", in my opinion

YSL Muse - my newest discovery, incredible paper-like vanilla and incense with a beautiful ink note

For a long time, I thought I disliked vanilla as a note but it turned out I just needed to find the right combinations of vanilla with other notes for me to be able to appreciate it 🖤

I only like vanilla in Guerlains except for Shalimar Eau de Parfum (too much of it in there though I don't know the whole Shalimar-range) but the vanilla in a good Guerlinade which is in many of the classic Guerlains is so good!

Yes! I own the solid perfume version and it's a lovely scent. Really unique.

Vanilla is definitely one of my favourite notes. Fragrances with a strong sweet vanilla note remind me of Christmas so my holiday time favourite vanillas are My Vanilla Garden, Vanille Bourbon Brume Parfumée, Tobacco Vanille Eau de Parfum, Tendre Madeleine and Vanillary Perfume.

Another favourite vanilla genre for me is tropical vanillas. My top favourite of that genre is Angel Fantasm which I also changed as my signature fragrance just recently. Other gorgeous ones from that category are for example Aura Eau de Parfum, La Belle Paradise Garden, Cheirosa '87 and Crystal Noir Eau de Toilette.

My third favourite vanilla genre is vanilla coffee, for example fragrances like Armani Code Ultimate pour Femme, A*Men, Black Opium Le Parfum, Khamrah Qahwa, The Scent Absolute for Her and Sweet Tooth Me Espresso Eau de Parfum.

Here are my picks -

Vanity Femme Elegance Eau de Parfum - cozy, creamy vanilla with a soft musky sweetness. Easy to wear and comforting.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum - not pure vanilla, but that airy amber-vanilla warmth is addictive and super elegant.

Vanilla | 28 Eau de Parfum - rich, warm vanilla with brown sugar and amber. Sweet, cozy, and perfect for layering or night wear.

I love the way you’ve categorized your vanilla preferences. I also love that you have a vast repertoire of likes and you’ve made great recommendations across many fragrance  notes in the past and, again, today. I am not familiar with Bo, Idolatory, Corpse of a Star and Doll-like Creature and look forward to sampling them. I wonder what you’ll think of Babycat it may be too pedestrian for you.

I don't really like vanilla perfumes, but there is an exception: Black Opium Le Parfum

It's smooth and enveloping like a cloud.

My first favorite vanilla was Cašmir Eau de Parfum that my mom wore. There are many listed notes in this, but the vanilla always stood out the most to me. I remember always pulling the cap off and smelling the nozzle.

Shalimar L'Essence is my most recent favorite vanilla, along with Pas de Velours. I really like smoky/incense vanillas like this. Midnight Toker (2025) has vanilla, as well, but it's more than just a vanilla scent. The vanilla does help it to be an absolute favorite of mine. It's perfect, so I wanted to mention it!

I used to have and loooooved Eau des Missions. It was a spicy, dry, and aromatic vanilla. Midnight Shimmer was the closest thing that smelled like it. I found an older bottle in a box of stored perfumes I found recently, so I'm going to test it more to see how it has held up. 🤞

Artemisia Eau de Parfum is a beautiful, powdery vanilla I love, and I've always liked the aromatic vanilla of Eau Duelle Eau de Toilette and fragrances that smell like it. The Architects Club is one i tried recently and it reminds me a lot of it.

La Danza delle Libellule Eau de Parfum is one I really like because of the red apple note. The vanilla is good in this, but that fresh red apple made me go for getting a bottle. Unfortunately, the red apple doesn't last as long as I'd like and while the vanilla is really nice in this, it has gotten a little boring to me over the years as my tastes have changed.

Fire at Will is a recent vanilla I've tried and really liked. It's a solid, quality vanilla. I smelled it on clothing the next day and it still smelled like it did after I sprayed. Sometimes vanilla can get stale or sharp on clothing after awhile, but this one didn't.

I'm sure I'm leaving others out. Vanilla is so versatile and has always been a favorite note of mine. It shows up in the base of a lot of the fragrances I wear.

I love Black Opium Le Parfum as well. It’s sensuous, sinuous and completely decadent. Lovely!

It is Ambre loup. Insane quality. Very resinous, yet beautiful. On my skin, the clove note is too  prohiminent

Funnily enough, some time after I had posted this, I tested Goddess Eau de Parfum and that unexpectedly jumped on the very first place of my vanilla fragrance ranking and also to my top favourite fragrances of all time, it was just pure love at first sniff! 😍🙏 It's kind of a combination of my favourite vanilla genres because I get both tropical and gourmand vanilla from it. It's also surprisingly complex - but easy to wear at the same time. It feels like a perfect fragrance for me so I have made it my new signature scent and worn it very often lately, just can't get enough of it atm 🥰

Vanilla is a favorite note of mine, and my most favorite vanilla is Vanilj. Cardamom, amber, cedarwood, musk, patchouli, and vanilla make for a spicy, barely sweet, woody vanilla that I think is amazing.

Other favorites are Vanille Antique, Vanilla Diorama, and Jazz.

While I haven’t actively explored it as a category, I do have a couple vanilla-centred scents.

Bare Vanilla | Victoria's Secret" is probably the “purest” vanilla fragrance I’ve enjoyed, particularly around bedtime. It’s got a nice caramelized edge to it that’s made it very cozy in the cold.

The other one is Sunlit Vanilla . This one is lighter and for me will be easier to wear in late spring/early summer, but it’s also one of the rare coconut notes that doesn’t turn sour on my skin.

For me, a good vanilla fragrance is one that feels smooth and blended rather than overly sugary.
Vanity Femme Elegance Eau de Parfum
I like this one because the vanilla isn’t loud or gourmand-heavy, it sits nicely in the base with sandalwood, amber and musk, giving it a soft, warm finish.
What really works for me is how the fruity and floral opening slowly settles into that creamy vanilla dry down, it feels elegant, slightly powdery and very wearable.

Divine Vanille such a simple sharp spicy not-too-gourmand vanilla with excellent value for price ratio

I'm not that big on vanilla as it tends to come off sweet to my nose. I really like This Is Him! though, it comes off really "dry" and not sweet at all, coupled with the incense its a really addictive. My girlfriend at the time bought it for me and she's probably worn it as much as I have if not more. Despite being marketed as a "male" fragrance it really did suit her goth aesthetic more than me.
